Review of Dearly Departed by Lia Habel
Unlike many of the dark romance books out there, Lia Habel’s debut novel is set, not in our time, but far in the future – in a world full of holographic images and Victorian values. Dearly Departed is easily distinguishable from the well-stocked market as its characters leap off the page and the author’s easily addictive, narrator-hopping script ensnares the reader from the start.
The world created by Habel is easy to fall in love with as it inter-mixes the conveniences and technology of the modern world with the soft-spoken respect and elegance of the Victorian period, and therefore, it is not only the situation our compelling heroine and her zombie kidnapper/protector/lover that captures the heart of the reader but the story as a whole.
In this way, the story of flesh-eating zombies attempting world takeover being thwarted by a band of ‘good’ zombies and the few humans who are in on it is completely gripping to the very last page.
