Review of ‘After the Snow’ by Sophie D. Crockett
Set in a time after the stupidity and selfishness of man has caused global warming to freeze the world into a snow-covered, icy place of misery, ‘After the Snow’ tells the story of Willo’s determination to find his family. His search for those he loves takes him from the mountains that he calls home; to the dangerous, despair-ridden city; and back again, but aside from the stunningly illustrative descriptions of the environment, the story keeps you captivated too.
Whilst Crockett prevents you from truly identifying with the book through the distance she maintains with the forever incorrect verb endings and unheard-of phrases, the themes she covers transcend to any reader. The loss, love and desperation felt by Willo are second only to the age-old idea of survival instinct verses humanity. It is only upon turning the final page that the true meaning of “beacon of hope” is demonstrated, and the ultimately uplifting ideology will permeate your thoughts long after the book is back on the shelf.
